News from Kalarama Farm

During the busy show and breeding seasons, it seems we rarely have time to catch up with news from the farm. So, we hope you'll enjoy this periodic newsletter, and will give us a call or drop us an e-mail when there's something we can help you with.

Whether you're making breeding plans, are working on a new show combination, or are fine-tuning your American Saddlebred for your favorite activity, best wishes for an enjoyable winter. And when you're out and moving around, be sure to plan a visit to Kalarama. We enjoy visitors!

— Joan, Larry, and staff

Congratulations to Miles, Ann, and Jessica Simien Curl from Overland Park, Kansas, on the purchase of Callaway's Halley's Comet from KAABA, Inc. We wish you much continued success with this extraordinary 4-year old, now trained by Brenda Benner Stables in Columbia, Missouri. We will be cheering for you.

The bulldozers are starting to gather on the edge of the property, getting ready to cut a bypass through the back 100 acres of Kalarama. We'll be selling some more mares to make the room needed to move our pasture horses around in order to accommodate the construction. We haven't had time to get all of the broodmares on the sales list, so if you prefer to know sooner (rather than later) just give Joan a call.

Congratulations to Misdee Wrigley for her most recent awards. Both World's Champion Harlem's Proud Mary and Callaway's Independence Day (shown at far left) were awarded UPHA Horse Of The Year honors at the organization's recent annual convention in Indianapolis. Way to go!

It's time for planning and preparation for the upcoming season. The registrations for our '03 crop of new yearlings are complete, the broodmares have been sorted into their compatible groups, and matings are being planned. The stallion line-up is once again Harlem Globetrotter, SA Tornaado, SA War Image, and Exalted Effect. Give us a call, and we'll be glad to discuss the potential breeding choices for your mare or mares.

We're celebrating Harlem Globetrotter's 24th birthday this year.
He enjoys preening for visitors to the farm, so if you're in the area, give us a call and stop by to see him. We thank the The Springfield Sun for these recent photos (here, at right, and at bottom left).

"I've received lots of positive feedback from many of you who purchased from our fall production sale, and I thank you," Joan says. "I can never hear enough good things." The foals from Harlem Superior were especially popular. The '03 crop is his first—and we'll be using him on farm mares again this year—so come back and look some more, for we'll have another group to choose from in the fall.

Special thanks to Dr. Geraldine Meanor and Nealia McCracken on the purchase of Misdee Wrigley's Prince of Harlem. Joan tells, "This is the second horse Dr. Meanor and Nealia have selected—one of our solid, honest young stars—and I wish you the same good luck that you've had with Tornaado's Tempest."

Speaking of Kalarama Stud's breeding program, managed by Joan Hamilton: "We are proud of the success our customers have had with the horses they have purchased from us and we continue striving to provide you with the quality it takes to succeed," Joan tells us. "My breeding program has produced many stars, but it is my intention to keep only the horses I need to perpetuate my breeding program," she continues. "Now on my fifth generation of breeding combinations exclusively selected to complement Kalarama Stud's stallions, I carefully construct a breeding plan for each mare. A mare's foals are frequently either retained or offered for sale based on their future breeding purpose in the plan — which may be two or more generations away — and not necessarily because of shorter-term performance potential." For that reason, many of the show ring stars you're probably familiar with were offered to outside buyers, and wisely snatched up at production sales or through private visits to the farm. As much as we enjoy seeing Joan's foals earn their show ring accolades under the Kalarama Farm banner, we also enjoy celebrating the success of her breeding program in the hands of other trainers and under the ownership of Saddlebred enthusiasts around the world. "That actually happens quite often," Joan smiles. "There's certainly no 'inside track' to owning tomorrow's Kalarama-bred champion. We prepare quality horses for the show ring or for you, the buyer -- whichever comes first."

There's an outstanding selection available now. The entire crop of 18 yearlings and two 2-year olds (2- and 3-year olds, as of Jan. 1) came into training in October after our fall production sale. "Among the up-and-coming stars I am especially proud of are the 3-year olds. Within the walk-trot group is the best I've raised since CHThe Groomsman and CHHarlem's Diamond Jim," Joan reveals, mentioning there are also outstanding gaited horses out of proven producers. "My fine harness colt is out of Conversationalist (dam of Kalarama's New Sensation), and the pleasure horses are from the families of CHElegant Stitches, CHPoint Man, and CHDiamond Minx. We have moderately and low-priced horses, as well as many, many others," she says. Be sure to visit our sales list and give Joan or Larry a call to discuss your needs.

Kudos to our friend Patricia Bechaalany on the announcement that Swiss Challenge, the beautiful black grandson of Harlem Globetrotter, has just been approved for semen export to several countries, including the United States. Owned by Ms. Bechaalany and standing at stud in Switzerland, Swiss Challenge is by Caveat (son of Courageous Admiral) and out of Chocolate and Pearls (a daughter of Harlem Globetrotter). His second dam is Oak Hill's Southern Rose (full sister to CHTown Dance, dam of CHHarlem Town). Patricia may be phoned at 00 41 79 658 38 39 or e-mailed at patricia@lrk.ch

Springfield (Ky.) Mayor Mike Haydon (left, in photo) and his staff surprised us with a proclamation designating November 13, 2003 as "Kalarama Appreciation Day." It was a wonderful day which started with a luncheon where the proclamation was presented to Joan, Larry, and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hamilton. The city staff gathered up trophies, ribbons, photos, and clippings of historical significance about the farm, and displayed them across the meeting rooms at City Hall, where they hosted a steady stream of family and friends for an afternoon reception. It was a great day.

And, we enjoyed a very special Hamilton family Christmas at the home of Joan's sister and brother-in-law, Celeste and Peter. Kalarama Farm is a big part of our family's history and day-to-day life; we thank you for including us in your busy day.

See you soon.

A wintry day's view of the property where construction of a new bypass will soon begin. Oh, progress ... must you pass so closely?
Welcome back, Neil and Debra! The Vissers just returned from an enjoyable Christmas holiday in South Africa, where baby Ryan was introduced to her Grandma Visser. We are very happy to have them back. And, yes, Santa easily located Ryan there.
"Indy" -- Misdee Wrigley's Callaway's Independence Day -- claimed Horse Of The Year honors in the Amateur Five Gaited division at the UPHA convention. Call Larry to learn more about this special horse.
This handsome grandson of Harlem Globetrotter is creating a following abroad, under the direction of Patricia Bechaalany of Switzerland. Larry once said, "People from all over the world know and love Harlem Globetrotter." Swiss Challenge is a good example of why that's true.
And more congrats to Misdee Wrigley and Mark Schofield for claiming the UPHA Hackney High Point Awards for the Single Division, as well as the Tandem and Pairs Open Carriage division. And, we're pleased to announce that Misdee is the newly elected UPHA Associate Member Vice President.
It was a proud day for the Kalarama family when Springfield honored us with Kalarama Appreciation Day. Click on the image to read the proclamation.
Harlem Globetrotter — selected by Joan and brought to Kalarama when he was 2 — continues to sire champion American Saddlebreds for use in all divisions.
